Suicidal Tendencies in Depressive People

Whenever someone who has been depressed would open up about suicide or about wanting to die or go away, even when he or she appears to be kidding, the listener should take the conversation seriously. In the same manner, any suicide plan—even if the attempt did not inflict any physical harm—must be taken seriously.

People wanting to commit suicide usually talk this out to people other than those close to them, like their family or parent. They usually talk to their friends they think they can trust. If you are that friend, don’t be afraid to talk to someone you think may be planning to commit suicide. There is no evidence that talking about suicide leads to suicidal thinking or suicide. Once you know the person’s thoughts on the subject, you may be able to help prevent a suicide.

There is a probability that individuals who have plans of committing suicide may not seek help since they have that feeling that they are helpless and hopeless. This actually is not the real picture. A lot of individuals with suicidal thoughts have medical conditions that can be successfully treated. People who have suicidal thoughts often have depression or substance abuse; both of these conditions can be treated. It is important to seek help when suicidal thoughts occur because medical treatment usually is successful in diminishing these thoughts.

Be alert and know that the probability of committing suicide is most grave when a person has a plan for committing suicide that includes:

1. Having set a time and place to commit suicide.

2. Having the means, such as weapons or medicines, available to commit suicide or do harm to another person.

3. Thinking there is no other way to solve the problem or end the pain.

People who are thinking of suicide sometimes are undecided about choosing life or death. With compassionate help, they may choose to live. That is hy suicide is actually just a “cry for help.”

If you are that depressed, individual, check your symptoms and determine if and when you need to see a health professional.
